Decks built for coastal weather

Coastal Grove builds and rebuilds decks across the Sunshine Coast in composite (Trex), vinyl membrane (Valor) and cedar, with aluminium or glass railings and RainEscape dry-below drainage. Most new decks run about $55–$110 per sq ft installed, depending on material and height, with stairs and railings priced separately. Resurfacing an existing deck with new plywood and a vinyl membrane runs $30–$50 per sq ft.

Questions

Decks FAQ

How much does a new deck cost on the Sunshine Coast?

In 2026, most new decks run $55–$110 per sq ft installed, including framing and footings: about $55–$85 for vinyl membrane or cedar, and $65–$110 for composite. Stairs are priced separately, and railings add $80–$150 per linear ft for aluminium or $150–$275 for glass. Resurfacing with new plywood and vinyl runs $30–$50 per sq ft. Permits aren’t included, but we can help you through the permit process.

Composite, vinyl or cedar: which lasts longest on the Coast?

Composite and vinyl membranes need the least maintenance in our climate. Cedar looks great but needs regular sealing and will weather faster on south and west exposures. A vinyl membrane is the right choice when the deck is a roof over living space.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Sechelt?

Usually, yes. In the District of Sechelt and the SCRD, a deck is exempt only if it’s freestanding and less than 0.6 m (2 ft) above the ground at every point; the SCRD also requires it to have no walls or roof. Higher decks, decks attached to the house and covered decks need a building permit. The Town of Gibsons has its own rules. We check with your local building department and handle the permit for you.

How do I know if my deck is unsafe?

Soft boards, loose railings, rust at connectors and any movement at the ledger board are warning signs. An Envelope Care visit includes a deck check.
